Sabien
With her acoustic guitar in hand, singer-songwriter Sabien from Apeldoorn crafts catchy Dutch pop songs that are perfect for singing along to in the car. Drawing inspiration from her own life experiences — following her heart, chasing dreams, and finding love — the 27-year-old artist reveals a powerful, often hidden side of herself. Through her music, she hopes to inspire listeners with a sense of optimism and hope.
After graduating from the Conservatorium in Utrecht, Sabien achieved several personal milestones with her English-language songs. She was featured three times as Podium Plaat on Radio Gelderland and supported acclaimed singer-songwriter Douwe Bob during one of his shows.
At that point, Sabien made a bold decision: to write exclusively in Dutch — the language in which her clear voice and heartfelt lyrics truly shine. It’s a choice that has certainly paid off. Her first Dutch single ‘Dit laat ik nooit meer gaan’ was immediately picked up by NPO Sterren NL, and her follow-up track ‘Liever nu dan ooit’ soon found a spot on the same playlist.
In ‘Dit laat ik nooit meer gaan’, Sabien — often modest by nature — powerfully expresses her desire to set aside doubt and fear in order to seize the opportunities that come her way. “Following my heart can be difficult,” she explains, “especially with all the opinions around me and the critical voices in my own head. Sometimes, I listen back to my own songs just to remind myself: ‘Go for it — don’t let them get to you!’”
Sabien draws great inspiration from the sound of Americana artists like Kelsea Ballerini and Kacey Musgraves. Elements such as catchy hooks, vivid imagery, lush harmonies, and full band arrangements often make their way into her own music. By blending this Americana feel with Dutch pop, Sabien’s sound has been compared to artists like Hannah Mae, Nielson, and Miss Montreal.
This coming spring (2025), Sabien will once again support Douwe Bob — as well as artists like Ilse DeLange and Meau — performing as part of a series of nine intimate campfire concerts, where she’ll present her new Dutch-language repertoire.
